A former auto sales garage in Greensburg was extensively damaged Friday when a truck caught fire as a worker was using a torch on the undercarriage of the vehicle, Greensburg’s fire chief said.

The fire, which was reported at 4 p.m., gutted the interior of the building at the corner of East Otterman Street and Arch Avenue and damaged the roof, Chief Tom Bell said. The worker was unable to extinguish the fire that burned the truck, and he fled the building, Bell said.

Medical personnel checked the worker, and he was fine, Bell said.

Smoke was seen billowing from the roof and windows, with the wind blowing smoke up the hillside into downtown Greensburg.

Greensburg area firefighting units, as well as those from Hempfield and Youngwood, were at the scene for about two hours.
