An East Huntingdon couple is accused by police of bilking a relative out of $200,000 and her Scottdale home prior to her April 2019 death, according to court papers.

Jane Ann Kiliany, 59, and John Eric Kiliany, 60, were arrested Wednesday by Westmoreland County detectives and released on their own recognizance. They are charged with conspiracy and receiving stolen property. Jane Kiliany faces an additional theft count.

Detectives started investigating in July 2019 when a relative of Lillie Loffer reported suspicions about Jane Kiliany, who was Loffer’s power of attorney since 2015. Loffer died April 30, 2019, at age 89. Jane Kiliany is her niece.

Kiliany told family members Loffer’s assets were depleted, but was unable to provide them with documentation as to how the money was spent, according to court papers filed by Detective Ray Dupilka. A review of Loffer’s bank account statements from four years showed numerous checks written regularly to Loffer for cash and to Jane and John Kiliany, police said.

Those checks ranged in amounts from a few thousand dollars to $50,000, all of which were deposited into accounts belonging to Jane and John Kiliany, according to court papers.

Loffer’s relatives told investigators she had cognitive issues after a stroke and was unlikely to need that much cash for daily expenses, according to court papers.

Jane Kiliany is accused of selling Loffer’s Scottdale home in June 2018 for $23,000 to a relative who then deeded the property to her and John Kiliany, according to court papers. The couple remains the property owner, according to county records. Loffer was living there at the time and moved to a nursing home a few months later, police said.

The couple purchased a property in Mt. Pleasant in 2016 for $40,100, according to court papers and county records. They sold that property in March for $123,000, according to county deeds.

Attorney Tim Andrews said Jane and John Kiliany have been cooperating with detectives. They have receipts and other documentation for money used from Loffer’s accounts. Andrews said he was working with them prior to charges being filed Tuesday.

“They were asked by relatives to take care of these things,” Andrews said. “We’re going to look into all the angles on this case.”

Preliminary hearings are set for July 15.
