State troopers from the Belle Vernon station in Rostraver are planning a sobriety checkpoint for Memorial Day weekend somewhere in their coverage area.
That includes parts of Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland counties, according to a news release. Troopers said they’ve identified primary and alternate locations for the checkpoint based on impaired driving data from PennDOT and other sources. The exact locations weren’t released.
A 1990 U.S. Supreme Court ruling held that police have to announce checkpoints ahead of time to meet a minimal standard of consent — if drivers know there’s a checkpoint and still drive, they’re effectively acknowledging that they could run into the checkpoint and be stopped.
