A Derry Township man was jailed Wednesday after state police said they found files of child pornography on his cell phone, according to court papers.

Randy Ronald Smith, 23, is charged with child pornography and criminal use of a communication facility.

Troopers said they got a tip Feb. 13 from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that was reported by Snapchat, a social media smart phone app. Two files of child pornography had been uploaded to a Snapchat user’s account, according to court papers.

Police determined the IP address connected to the account was used by Smith. Through a search warrant, troopers said in court papers that they found multiple files of child pornography on Smith’s cell phone.

He was being held on $100,000 bail at the Westmoreland County Prison. A July 6 preliminary hearing is set. Smith did not have an attorney listed in online court records.
