McChesneytown-Loyalhanna church is in “desperate need” of roof repairs, and to help raise money the church will host a car hop Saturday.
This is the first car hop that Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church will hold, said Sandi Balik, church fundraising and finance director.
The church hopes to draw in donations to at least patch the old leaky roof for the winter, Balik said.
The event, which will run from noon to 5 p.m., will take place in the church’s parking lot at 4827 Route 982.
Participants must pay $5 per vehicle to attend the car hop. During the event, the church also will hold a 50-50 raffle and place donation jars throughout the area.
Those attending also can enjoy trophies, door prizes, a blessing of the drivers, oldies music and food such as homemade pierogies. The food, which was donated, will be prepared by church members.
Prizes will be given to vehicles in nine classes.
Those who wish to participate in the vehicle contest must register by 1 p.m.
“I’m just praying it doesn’t rain and we get a good turnout,” said Balik of Derry Township.
A few minutes away, Latrobe’s first Italian Festival will be underway. The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
