Recent covid hospitalization numbers have been declining for several straight days in the state and Allegheny County. But those streaks ended Tuesday, when both saw increases to its current covid hospitalization total.
The state saw its first increase to its current covid hospitalization total after having 12 consecutive days of decreases. Tuesday’s hospitalization total was 2,172, up 21 from Monday. During the 12-day span of declining hospitalization figures, Pennsylvania saw a 24.3% decrease to its hospitalization total.
Likewise, in Allegheny County, covid hospitalizations went up Tuesday, ending a nine-day streak of declining hospitalization numbers. There were 189 covid-19 patients hospitalized on Tuesday, up three from Monday’s count. During the nine-day span, the current covid hospitalization total decreased by 35.8%. The county had fewer than 200 people hospitalized for covid-19 for the past three days, which hasn’t happened since late March.
Covid hospitalizations in Westmoreland County remained at 31 patients Tuesday, the same as it had been Monday. In the past three days, hospitalizations in the county have either decreased or remained at the previous level.
Cases
On Tuesday, Pennsylvania reported an additional 3,133 covid cases, according to the state Department of Health. Those reported cases (2,413 confirmed, 720 probable) bring the seven-day case average down to 3,176, the lowest it has been since March 23. The state reported fewer than 5,000 new cases each day since April 17. Total cases in Pennsylvania are now 1,161,619. Counties that reported the most cases Tuesday were Philadelphia (477), Berks (237) and Allegheny (222).
Allegheny County’s case count Tuesday had 157 confirmed and 65 probable cases. New cases ranged in age from 1 to 90 with a median age of 32, according to the county Health Department. Tuesday’s case count marks the fourth consecutive day cases have been under 300. Case counts have been under 400 in the county since April 17. During that span, there have been fewer than 300 cases reported in 12 of 17 days. Total case now stand at 98,197.
An additional 87 covid cases were reported Tuesday in Westmoreland County. Those cases (40 confirmed, 47 probable) bring the seven-day average down to 78, the lowest it has been since March 20. The county’s case total is now 32,915.
Deaths
Pennsylvania reported 58 additional covid-related deaths on Tuesday, according to the state Department of Health. Of the newly reported deaths, 51 are from April and seven are from May. Tuesday’s reported deaths are the most since April 27, when 84 deaths were reported. Total deaths in Pennsylvania are now 26,334.
There were 12 new deaths reported in Allegheny County, per the county Health Department. Ages of the deceased were: two people in their 30s, one in their 50s, four in their 60s, three in their 70s and two in their 80s. One death was associated with a long-term care facility. Dates of death ranged from Feb. 1 to Saturday.
There were no new deaths reported in Westmoreland County. The county’s death total stays at 746.
Vaccinations
As covid vaccinations currently stand, about 32.4% of Pennsylvanians are fully vaccinated and 49% are partially vaccinated, according to state Department of Health data. A month ago, those numbers were 17.8% and 33.6%, respectively. Those figures include Philadelphia County, which handles its own vaccine data. Philadelphia’s vaccine figures were last updated Monday.
In Allegheny County, about 35.9% of residents are fully vaccinated and 55.4% partially vaccinated. The county hit 30% full vaccination on April 23 and 50% partially vaccinated on April 24.
A covid vaccination milestone was reached Tuesday in Westmoreland County as 30% of residents are now fully vaccinated. There are about 42.2% partially vaccinated in the county.
