You don’t have to travel all the way to Germany to celebrate the autumn season.

Baltzer Meyer Historical Society in Hempfield will host an Oktoberfest festival on Sept. 17, featuring beer, snacks, refreshments, and historical activities.

The event runs from noon to 4 p.m. at the Historical Society at 624 Balzer Meyer Pike.

Historical Society board member Rob Myers will present about the history of the holiday—its origins in Germany and how it came to the United States—at 1 p.m.

German historical items from the Baltzer Meyer collection will be on display, including several illustrated German bibles, said member Franny Petras.

A beer truck from Jeannette-area Sobel’s Obscure Brewery will hand out samples and sell their drinks. Bratwurst, kraut, pretzels and non-alcoholic beverages will also be available.

Food proceeds will benefit the Historical Society.
