The Hempfield Area School District board approved a resolution that limits any tax increase to support the 2024-2025 budget to the 6.5% ceiling set by the state.
Any increase above that index would have required approval from voters in the district or the state in a process governed by a state law commonly called Act 1.
The district will be limited to a 5.57 mill increase to the district’s millage rate of 85.76 mills. Hempfield Area has— currently the second lowest millage in the county. This means the district’s millage for 2024-2025 could go only as high as 91.33 mills.
One mill of real estate taxes generates about $637,000 in real estate tax revenue for the district, according to a presentation given by Business Manager Paul Schott at the meeting.
The resolution does not set or finalize the upcoming tax millage rate for 2024-2025—instead, it establishes an upper limit for the amount that taxes could potentially increase, Schott said.
