Allegheny, Westmoreland covid hospitalizations down more than 15% from last week

Covid hospitalizations have been trending in a positive direction recently for the state and local counties.

New covid data show that from last week to Tuesday, hospitalizations in Pennsylvania as well as Allegheny and Westmoreland counties have decreased somewhat significantly.

Hospitalizations

Pennsylvania saw a sixth consecutive day of decrease to its covid hospitalization total Tuesday, according to state Department of Health figures. There were 2,448 people hospitalized for covid-19 Tuesday, down from last Tuesday’s hospitalization total of 2,833. From week to week, the number of current hospitalizations has dropped 13.5%.

Similarly, Allegheny County saw a third consecutive day of hospitalizations drop Tuesday. There were 237 people hospitalized for covid-19 as of Tuesday, which returns the county to hospitalization levels seen at the beginning of April. Covid hospitalization were down 15.6% from last week, when 281 were hospitalized last Tuesday.

While Westmoreland County’s current hospitalization total grew by one Tuesday, it was still down week to week, as well. The county’s 47 hospitalized covid patients was down 20.3% from last Tuesday’s 59 hospitalized.

Vaccinations

As of Tuesday, there are now 3,239,152 people fully vaccinated for covid-19 in Pennsylvania, according to the state Department of Health. Additionally, there are 1,925,582 people partially vaccinated in the state. Both partial and full vaccinations count do not include Philadelphia County, which handles its own vaccine data. The number of people fully vaccinated in Pennsylvania has nearly doubled in a month. On March 27, there were 1,704,129 people fully vaccinated at that time.

Allegheny County has 260,577 people partially and 386,527 fully vaccinated for covid as of Tuesday. The number of full vaccinations translates to about 31.6% of the county. A month ago, there were 197,902 people fully vaccinated for covid-19 in the county.

With its current vaccination numbers, about 27.1% of Westmoreland County is fully vaccinated. As of Tuesday, there were 49,651 people partially and 99,014 fully vaccinated for covid-19.

Cases

An additional 3,333 covid cases (2,434 confirmed, 899 probable) were reported Tuesday in Pennsylvania, per the state Department of Health. Philadelphia County reported the most cases with 280. The seven-day case average decreased to 3,646, the lowest that figure has been since March 28. Total cases in the state are now 1,139,390.

Allegheny County reported the second most cases with 260 on Tuesday (157 confirmed, 103 probable). The new cases ranged in age from 2 months to 83 years, with a median age of 31, according to the county Health Department. The seven-day case average is now 275, the lowest since March 20. Total cases are now 96,428.

Case averages in Westmoreland County are also dropping. The seven-day case average is 96 as of Tuesday, the first time it has been under 100 in April and lowest in a month. There were 116 covid cases (50 confirmed, 66 probable) reported on Tuesday. The county’s case total is now 32,368.

Deaths

There were 84 covid deaths reported Tuesday in Pennsylvania, according to the state Department of Health. That count is the most reported deaths since Feb. 23, when 97 were reported. Of the deaths reported Tuesday, 83 are from April and one is from December. The state’s death total now stands at 26,072.

Westmoreland County reported two more covid deaths Tuesday. The death total in the county increased to 738 as a result. The county has not reported more than four deaths in a daily count this month and has reported no deaths eight times in April.

No additional deaths were reported in Allegheny County on Tuesday and the death total remained at 1,859. In the last three days, there has been only one death reported over that span.
