Allegheny, Westmoreland counties see largest increase in covid cases in month

Allegheny and Westmoreland counties on Tuesday saw the most additional covid cases in about a month, according to state and local health departments.

There were 348 additional covid-19 cases (166 confirmed, 182 probable) reported in Allegheny County, the first time there were more than 300 additional cases reported this month. The dates of positive tests ranged from March 1 to Monday with ages ranging from 7 months to 93, with a median age of 37. Tuesday’s count was the most reported cases since Feb. 9, when 405 cases were reported.

In Westmoreland County, there were 100 additional covid cases (23 confirmed, 77 probable) reported. The county had gone more than 30 days with cases in the double-digits prior to Tuesday. The new case count is the most since Feb. 3, when 115 cases were reported.

Total cases in Allegheny County are now 78,705. Westmoreland County’s case total is now 27,303.

Two deaths in Allegheny County and one in Westmoreland County were reported Tuesday.

The deaths in Allegheny County ranged from Nov. 24 to Dec. 28, with the Allegheny County Health Department noting that the deaths were from an import of data by the state from Electronic Death Reporting System. Both individuals were in their 90s and one was associated with a long-term care facility.

The death totals in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties now stand at 1,703 and 684, respectively.

According to the state’s covid-19 vaccine dashboard, 142,820 people are partially covered for covid vaccination (received one dose) in Allegheny County, while 93,824 are fully vaccinated (received two doses). There are 36,940 people partially and 25,441 people fully covered for covid vaccination in Westmoreland County.

Covid hospitalizations in the two counties went different ways with Tuesday’s numbers. Allegheny’s current hospitalization number was 164, up five from Monday. Westmoreland’s number was 114, down six from Monday. Allegheny County started March with 169 patients hospitalized with covid-19. Westmoreland County started the month with 111 hospitalized.

Pennsylvania

The state had 2,975 additional covid cases and 40 deaths reported Tuesday, according to the state Department of Health.

Tuesday’s case count (1,964 confirmed, 1,011 probable) was the second largest of the month so far, with the largest coming March 4 with 3,028. Of the deaths reported Tuesday, 29 are from March, 10 are from February and one is from January.

The new figures bring Pennsylvania’s covid case total to 953,136. The death total is now 24,396.

Hospitalizations for covid-19 were 1,530 as of Tuesday, up 28 from Monday. The state started the month with 1,715 patients hospitalized and that number has generally decreased, with only two days in March showing an increase in hospitalizations.

As of Tuesday, there have been 1,085,121 people partially and 981,209 fully covered for covid vaccination, per the state’s covid-19 vaccine dashboard

Across the state, there were six counties that reported 100 or more covid cases Tuesday. Philadelphia County had the most cases with 473. Allegheny (348), Bucks (144), Lancaster (128). Montgomery (110) and Westmoreland (100) rounded out that list.

In Western Pennsylvania, Allegheny and Westmoreland counties had the most cases in the region.
