Allegheny County covid case average lowest since Halloween

Both the state and Allegheny County on Tuesday saw covid-19 statistics drop to levels not seen since the fall. Locally and at the commonwealth level, case averages are back to where they were late last year.

Cases

Allegheny County saw its seven-day average of covid-19 cases drop to lows not seen in six and a half months, per state Department of Health data.

The county’s seven-day average of covid cases was 140 as of Tuesday, the lowest it has been since Halloween. There were 166 cases (69 confirmed from PCR tests, 97 probable) reported Tuesday. New cases ranged from 3 months to 92, with a median age of 29, according to the county Health Department. The case total for Allegheny County now stands at 100,367.

The ACHD released weekly covid case numbers for county neighborhoods Monday, for the week of May 10-16. The neighborhoods will the most cases were: Penn Hills (53), Upper St. Clair (42), McKeesport (36), Plum (35) and Monroeville (32).

In Westmoreland County, Tuesday’s cases were 27 confirmed and 56 probable. The county saw the most cases reported in 10 days. There have now been 33,735 total cases reported in Westmoreland County.

Pennsylvania had 1,730 new cases (1,100 confirmed, 630 probable) in total reported Tuesday, according to the state Department of Health. That case count brings the seven-day average down to 1,682, the lowest it has been since Oct. 24.

Counties with the most reported cases Tuesday were Allegheny (166), Philadelphia (101), York (87) and Westmoreland (83). Total cases in the state are now 1,188,845.

Deaths

The state saw 38 additional covid deaths reported Tuesday, according to the Department of Health. Of those, 33 are from May and five are from April. Total deaths in Pennsylvania are now 26,871.

The Allegheny County Health Department reported four additional deaths Tuesday: two were from October and two from May. Of those deaths, two were associated with a long term care facility. Ages of the deceased were one in their 50s, one in their 70s and two in their 90s.

There were no new deaths reported in Westmoreland County on Tuesday. The death total remains at 758.

Vaccinations

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are 7,010,884 Pennsylvania residents who are at least partially vaccinated for covid-19, as of Monday evening. That represents about 54.8% of the state’s total population. There are 5,032,660 people full vaccinated in the state, which is 39.3% of the population.

As of Tuesday, about 41.8% of Allegheny County’s total population is fully vaccinated, with 512,392 receiving a single- or two-dose vaccine. There are 201,614 people partially vaccinated in the county.

Westmoreland County has about 34.9% of its total population fully vaccinated (127,575 people). There are 36,118 people in the county partially vaccinated as of Tuesday.

Hospitalizations

Pennsylvania saw its 14th consecutive day of decline to current covid hospitalizations, according to state covid data. There were 1,427 covid-19 patients hospitalized as of Tuesday. Over the two-week span, covid hospitalizations have decreased 34.3%.

In Allegheny County, there were 137 covid patients hospitalized in the county on Tuesday. Over the past week, there has been a decline to the hospitalization number in five of seven days.

There were 31 covid hospitalizations in Westmoreland County on Tuesday. Conversely, that marks an increase in five of the past seven days.
