5 things to do in Westmoreland this weekend: Oct. 14-16
One of the biggest of the annual community festivals in the region returns this weekend in Ligonier and the Westmoreland Symphony comes back to life as it opens its 2023-24 season. All that and more is coming up this weekend.
Fort Ligonier Days
For the 64th year, the historic Fort Ligonier site comes to life with reenactors, artillery firings, historical demonstrations and bagpipe music from Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.. The event commemorates the historic Oct. 12, 1758 Battle of Fort Ligonier.
This year, guests are invited to stop by Sutlers Row located on the front lawn of the museum. Justin Cherry and his Half Crown Bakehouse, and other 18th century-inspired artisans will be selling food. Historical demonstrations will take place throughout the weekend.

Miniature Space Ship Workshop
On Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m., award winning miniature artist Natalie Condrac will lead guests through the creation of their own model spaceship. Guests will assemble, paint and customize their own UFO using materials like bowls, beads, paper and plastic. This You Are Here event is open to participants 18 years and over. Tickets are $30.

Bushy Run Fall Tea
In the tradition of afternoon teas, which became popular in the 18th century, the Busy Run Fall Tea will be held on Saturday in the stone room at the visitor center at the Bushy Run Battlefield. This event offers tea, finger sandwiches and scones. More than a midday repast, guests will get a taste of the educational opportunities available at the historical park.

Orchestra opening night
On Saturday at 7:30 p.m., The Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra (WSO) will kick off the 55th performance season with award-winning pianist Janice Carissa performing Rachmaninoff’s soaring, monumental Piano Concerto No. 2.
The evening will open with Khachaturian’s ballet “Adagio of Spartacus” and Phrygia and Tchaikovsky’s dramatic tale of forbidden love – “Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture.” Daniel Meyer, Artistic Director will be conducting. Tickets are available starting at $20.

Children’s Saturday Studio: Pop Out 3D Painting
On Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, children from ages 7 to 10 are invited to create a 3D pop out painting from their imagination. The Westmoreland Museum of American is hosting the event to give painters the opportunity to have free reign with their creativity, painting anything from fun and funky, to spooky and festive. Children will create their pieces by using paint and paper to assemble a 3D painting.
