The first weekend of 2024 is off to a quick start featuring activities for resolution makers and those wanting to get a few more celebrations in before the holiday season is finished. Here’s what’s happening this weekend in Westmoreland County.

Holiday light extravaganza

Living Treasures Animal Park is hosting its second holiday light extravaganza series. The park in Donegal Township will begin the lights at 5 p.m. each weekday.

Christmas lights will be displayed throughout the zoo using over 900,000 bulbs. Three light and sound shows will occur throughout the night. Guests are welcome to bring flashlights during the night to better see animals still available for viewing. The event begins at noon on weekends. Extended hours listed for Saturdays and Sundays are for daylight viewing of the animals.

Admission ranges from $13 to $10 with children 2-years and younger able to get in for free. For more, visit golaurelhighlands.com.

Twelfth Night Celebration

Fort Ligonier’s self proclaimed “most festive night of the year” will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday night. Guests will spend the evening celebrating the 18th century tradition of Twelfth Night.

Also known as Epiphany or Three Kings’ Day, Jan. 6 in colonial times was the final day of the holiday season and the most celebrated. The celebration will include period music featuring The Wayward Companions, dancing, treats, spirits and the crowning of a king and queen. Guests are encouraged to wear 18-century clothing.

Register online at eventbrite.com or by calling Fort Ligonier at 724-238-9701.

Admission is $45 for Fort Association members and $55 for non-members.

Run/Fun Walk

On Saturday at 1 p.m., Gingerbread Man Running Company will host a New Year’s Resolution Run/Fun Walk around Keystone State Park Lake in Derry Township.

The pre-registration fee is $12 per person. Money will go toward covering organization and planning costs, and awards. There will be overall and age group awards for the 5K run. Same day registration is $17.

The race is weather dependent. In the case of a severe cold weather warning, ice storm or snow that impacts road travel, the race will be canceled or rescheduled.
