This weekend is all about education — and a few laughs. Exercise your brain with the local how-to guides for gardening, art, crafts and historic firearms this weekend in Westmoreland County.

Investigating pastels

On Friday, Cindy Berceli will lead a 10 a.m. class at the Greensburg Art Center , 230 Todd School Road in Hempfield, in working with pastels on different papers. Some of the different canvas textures include velour and sanded.

This is a one-time session to introduce interested artists to a new medium of creation. Admission is $15.

Historic arms show

Old Westmoreland Rifles Black Powder Shooting Club will be hosting the group’s 26th annual Bushy Run Historic Arms Show at The Lamplighter restaurant, 6566 Route 22 in Salem this weekend.

Starting Friday at 1 p.m., guests will have access to historic arms displays including Kentucky rifles, accessories and arms made during the period from 1700 to 1850 and handcrafted reproductions.

There are no children under 16 years of age allowed into the show without adult supervision, no alcohol and no gunpowder or ammunition will be permitted. The show will run through Saturday. For more, visit oldwestmorelandrifles.com.

National Seed Swap Day

The Penn State Master Gardeners of Westmoreland County return to the Donohoe Center in Hempfield for National Seed Swap Day.

On Saturday at 10 a.m., the Master Gardeners will present programs on harvesting, processing, saving and sharing seeds.

Pre-registration is required and as of 5 p.m. Friday, the event is sold out.

Presenters will also discuss how to collect seeds from a garden and keep them viable for planting the following year, the difference between seeds of perennials and annuals and the necessary tools and process. There will also be a demonstration of “winter sowing” where a team of seed-gathering enthusiasts will answer questions.

If guests intend to share seeds, label them in envelopes with the plant name, date and if they have “family or historical interest.” Guests are not required to bring seeds to receive seeds.

Steel City Comedy Tour

Steel City Comedy Tour is making a stop at Yinzer Valley Farms in East Huntingdon on Saturday night.

Starting at 8 p.m., performers Derek Minto and Tim Ross will open for Buddy Flip. The event will be emceed by Amanda Averell. Admission is $15 and includes a pizza buffet. Outside food is welcome in the venue at 681 Mulberry Hill Road. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show will start at 8 p.m.

12th Octave soap making

On Sunday, music and art studio, the 12th Octave, 217 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Greensburg, will be hosting a soap making class at 1 p.m.

For $22, participants will melt and pour their own uniquely designed soaps. At the end of the event, they will be able to take home their ready-to-use creations. For more, visit 12thoctave.com.
