5 things to do in Westmoreland County: May 13-15
Art and music
A weekend exhibition of artwork by 15 students from three area school districts will open at noon Friday at Green Beacon Gallery, 235 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg.
A free, all-ages reception with virgin cocktails and light refreshments is set for 3-6 p.m. Saturday. The gallery’s weekend hours are noon-midnight Friday, noon-11 p.m. Saturday and 1-6 p.m. Sunday.
Exhibitors are students in the Greensburg Salem, Hempfield Area and Greater Latrobe school districts.
The gallery also will host live music starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with Mike Urich and The Modelaires followed by the Polkamaniacs. There will be a name-your-price cover charge for the show.
For information, visit Green Beacon Gallery on Facebook.
Doggy story time
Children are invited to practice reading aloud to dogs on Friday at Murrysville Community Library, 4130 Sardis Road.
Taking place the second Friday of each month, the Dog Reading Pals program is designed to help emerging readers gain confidence by reading aloud to a non-judgmental dog pal. Pre-readers also are welcome.
Sign-ups are taken in 15-minute slots between 4 and 5 p.m. Available slots will depend on the number of dogs and volunteer handlers expected to attend. Children who sign up will be given first priority, although walk-ins are welcome.
Program participants are required to wear masks. Masks will be provided if needed.

• Completely Unchained, paying tribute to Van Halen, takes the stage at 8 p.m. Saturday. Playing all of the hits, the four-piece band promises “the attitude, sounds, excitement, energy and most of all the fun that Van Halen produced as one of the best rock bands in the world.” Tickets are $30.

Talks and exhibits in pavilions 3 and 10 will focus on transforming your property into a refuge for native birds, pollinators and wildlife. Topics will include native plants, climate change, backyard birding, permaculture principles and more. Experts will be on hand to answer questions.
The event is free, but registration is requested at allevents.in. For information, call 724-238-1200 or email cecolbert@pa.gov.
