Dads get in free

In recognition of Father’s Day, admission to Bushy Run Battlefield is free for dads this weekend when they’re accompanied by one or more of their kids — regardless of the offspring’s age.

Tours of the museum and golf cart tours of the battlefield will be available throughout the weekend. The 213-acre site of the 1763 Pontiac’s War battle also has interpretive walking trails.

If you’re a last-minute shopper and dad is a history buff, you can buy his gift from the Edge Hill Gift Shop inside the visitor center.

Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and noon-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday at the historical complex off Route 993 in Penn Township. Admission is $5, or $3 for ages 3-12.

Rock and ribs

Catch the mist, catch the myth, catch the mystery, catch the … scent of barbecue and the lyrics of Rush in the air this weekend in Rostraver.

Presented by Drusky Entertainment, the Vinoski Winery Rib Fest will offer three days of food trucks and rock music.

Thunderstruck: America’s AC/DC Tribute will perform at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $10-$12 at eventbrite.com.

General admission to Saturday and Sunday shows is free, although registration is suggested. Headlining Saturday’s 3 p.m. show is Rush tribute band Sawyer, with special guest Royal Honey. Six Gun Sally takes the stage at 1 p.m. Sunday, playing Southern rock classics.

Work and play

It’s all work AND all play on Saturday at Compass Inn Museum in Laughlintown. About 25 soot-covered smithies from the museum and the Pittsburgh Area Artists Blacksmith Association will toil away during a Hammer In from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., demonstrating the craft of bending iron to their own iron wills.

The fun will come from Professor Chalmers Bodkin-Childs Patent Medicine & Magic Show. From 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Faire Wynds Entertainment offers a fresh take on entertainments of the past with magic, juggling, feats of strength and dexterity, fire-eating and escapeology.

Admission to the site is $12, $11 for ages 62 and older, $8 for ages 6-17, free to younger children and active military.

Order in the court

Frontier justice wasn’t just shoot first, ask questions later. This weekend, Westmoreland Historical Society will reenact actual court cases heard at Hanna’s Town between 1773 and 1786, when the settlement served as the Westmoreland County seat.

Also on tap are militia encampments and demonstrations, Native American history and culture, food, children’s activities and living history demonstrations and displays, including blacksmithing, woodworking, spinning and weaving, medicine and rifle-making. An 18th-century religious service is planned for Sunday morning.

Hours will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the historical complex at 809 Forbes Trail Road, Hempfield. Admission is $10, $5 for children, free to those 5 and younger.
