Two people, including a New Stanton man, were killed in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday morning in Fayette County that state police attributed to wintry weather conditions.

Troopers said a Ford Ranger being driven at 7 a.m. by Stanley A. Ohler, 26, of Connellsville, was traveling north on Route 119 in Bullskin Township when the pickup crossed over the grass median and hit a southbound Jeep Wrangler head-on.

Both Ohler and the driver of the Jeep, Matthew E. Hurst, 46, of New Stanton, died at the scene, police said.

The crash happened near Kingview Road and the Westmoreland County border.

About 5.5% of crashes in 2020 took place during wintry conditions such as snow, sleet or freezing rain, according to PennDOT statistics. Of those 5,756 crashes, there were 30 fatalities.

In 2019, there were 8,316 crashes during wintry weather, about 6.6% of the total amount of collisions. That year, there were 37 fatalities, according to PennDOT statistics.
