Several organizations are hosting events Monday to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Here are some ways to honor King’s legacy in Pittsburgh:
Prayer breakfast
The Allegheny County Bar Association on Monday is hosting their 24th Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast and Program at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Wylie Avenue from 7:30 a.m. till 11:30 a.m.
Touted as one of the region’s largest Martin Luther King Jr. Day events, the program commemorates his contributions to changes in law and social justice.
The event will include a buffet-style breakfast, a prayer service and a recognition program.
Representative Summer Lee will be honored with the Drum Major for Justice Award during the event.
The event is open to the public, and the bar association requests that attendees bring donations of diapers, wipes or formula for Ebenezer Baptist Church’s community pantry for the event.
At the Children’s Museum
The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh has several activities planned to engage youth in the day.
Events include opportunities to paint a self portrait of hopes and dreams, create art to be shared with local community groups and care homes and visit the “I Have A Dream” mural designed by artists from Gwen’s Girls, Youth Places and MuseumLab’s afterschool program.
Local artists Morgan Overton and Trenita Finney will host an art program from 1 p.m. till 5 p.m. at the museum.
Nikki Giovanni talk
The University of Pittsburgh on Tuesday evening will host Nikki Giovanni, a retired professor from Virginia Tech University. Her career has focused on bringing awareness to issues of racism and gender identity. A renowned poet, Giovanni will host a discussion at the university titled “From Surviving to Thriving: Culturally Relevant Emotional Wellness.”
The event is free, but attendees will be asked to provide registration confirmation at the door.
Food drive at Trace Brewing
Repair the World is hosting a food and supply drive at Trace Brewing on Main Street. People can stop by to drop off donations and participate in their donation sorting party between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday.
Community mural at Pittsburgh Glass Center
Pittsburgh Glass Center is hosting a free community day from 11 a.m. till 4 p.m. Monday. The event includes free demonstrations and activities, like glassblowing and flameworking demonstrations by local glass artists.
Visitors also can contribute to a collaborative community mural.
People are encouraged to bring books to donate to the center’s Free Community Little Library.
