Vandergrift police say a man wanted on multiple warrants had to be repeatedly shocked with a stun gun after he ran from officers and then bit one of them in the arm while being taken into custody.

Antjuan Dewayne Smith, 39, of the 2600 block of Brown Avenue in Hempfield was charged with three felony counts of aggravated assault along with three counts of simple assault, five counts of resisting arrest and a count of criminal mischief.

Smith was being detained in the Westmoreland County jail in lieu of 10% of a $10,000 bond, or $1,000, according to court records. He faces a preliminary hearing Tuesday, Nov. 1 before District Judge Cheryl Peck Yakopec.

Police wrote in a criminal complaint charging Smith that they were dispatched to a home in the 300 block of Linden Avenue shortly before 8 a.m. on Oct. 23 for a reported domestic dispute.

The caller told a 911 dispatcher that Smith had outstanding arrest warrants and would run if he saw police, the complaint said. Police said they confirmed warrants for a state parole violation as well as warrants for Smith’s arrest by the Delmont and Washington Township police departments.

When officers arrived, they blocked the space where Smith’s car was parked so he couldn’t drive off, the complaint said.

But police said Smith was sleeping behind the wheel and was asked to step out once he was awakened by officers.

They said they went “hands on” when Smith pulled away from an officer who tried to grab him as he attempted to start the car, the complaint said.

After getting him out of the car, officers had to bring him to the ground because he tried to run, police said.

Police said Smith refused to be placed in handcuffs, so another officer used a stun gun four times to his stomach to get him to comply, according to the complaint.

Officers had to carry Smith away because he refused to be escorted to a patrol vehicle, police said. He bit one of them in the arm while being carried away, the complaint said.

Police said Smith grabbed onto the SUV’s rear door handle to try to stop from being put inside and only let go when an officer struck his hand repeatedly, which also caused the handle to break off.

Smith was again hit with the stun gun when he resisted attempts by officers to get him into the back of the police cruiser, the complaint said.

Once inside the cruiser, Smith continued acting out by kicking the SUV’s doors on the way to jail and tried to slip the handcuffs to the front of his body, police said.
