3 flown to hospitals after head-on crash in Buffalo Township

Three people were flown by medical helicopter to area hospitals after a head-on crash late Sunday in Buffalo Township.

Police received reports at 8:41 p.m. of a two-vehicle collision near Buffalo Plaza along Route 356, according to Chief Tim Derringer.

A man and a woman were taken by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in critical condition.

Another person suffered chest and leg injuries and was flown to Allegheny General Hospital in stable condition.

There was no update on their conditions as of Monday morning.

The flights were staged out of Freeport Area High School with help from Sarver Volunteer Fire Company.

Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company and Freeport Fire-EMS handled extrication and doused a small fire from one of the vehicles.

The section of Route 356 where the crash took place was briefly closed.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
