A burrito with a snack food flair is creating a buzz in Parks Township.
The Dorito Burrito is a specialty offering and best-seller at Niki’s Quick Six, a popular restaurant/bar/takeout place in the township’s North Vandergrift neighborhood.
Owner Niki Hosack said she created the quirky sandwich so her customers wouldn’t get bored with the menu.
“A lot of my customers have been coming in a long time and I would switch things around. I wanted to add variety to their life,” Hosack said.
Hosack said folks drive from as far as downtown Pittsburgh to nosh on the toasted burrito that never, ever has beans.
“I don’t do beans,” Hosack said.
The creation’s namesake ingredient is a handful of crushed Doritos — Cool Ranch variety. Those crunchy elements join bacon, pepperoni, turkey, cheese, ranch dressing and mayo, enveloped in a cheddar jalapeno wrap.
Hosack said she experimented with different flavored wraps before settling on the jalapeno cheddar.
“If you don’t have that flavor wrap, it doesn’t taste the same. You need all of it to actually pull it together,” Hosack said. “Some customers tell me they try and duplicate my burrito at home but they can’t do it.”
The Dorito Burrito goes for $8.99 — except on Mondays, when it’s $2 off.
“I sell about 40 of them on Monday,” she said. “One man buys seven every Monday. He told me he takes them on the road with his job and eats them all week.”
West Leechburg resident Joe Sperski discovered the Dorito Burrito by accident a few years ago when he stopped at Niki’s to have a beer.
“I had a beer and a waitress told me about it. I love the saltiness combined with the creaminess of the ranch, mayo and cheeses — all wrapped up and so good,” Sperski said.
Bubba Scott of Vandergrift ordered his first Dorito Burrito this week.
“I heard about it,” said Scott as he tried it Wednesday. “It’s got a different taste to it and the flavor is good. I’d order another one.”
Hosack said she’d never think of removing the Dorito Burrito from the menu.
“I’d have very upset customers,” she said.
The restaurant’s main location is 1024 First St. (Route 66). The Dorito Burrito is also sold at Niki’s Quick Six’s second location, 1774 Route 66 in the Spring Church section of Kiski Township.
