Highlands High School musical director Michael Zeiler and co-technical director Mark Loya, a Highlands 2016 alumnus, work on a waterfall prop for the upcoming spring musical production of “High School Musical 2: On Stage!” The set was completed in about 16 days and features LED simulated fire, water and more effects.

Set construction is on schedule at Highlands High School for the spring musical production of “High School Musical 2: On Stage!”

Highlands musical director Michael Zeiler said a team of about 10 volunteers constructed the multi-level set in about 16 days.

Co-tech director Mark Loya spent 16 hours programming the animated lighting design, Zeiler said.

“These productions are only possible due to the hard work and passion of the production staff and students,” Zeiler said.

About 150 students from the high school art and choral departments volunteered for 10 days on the set, under the direction of teachers Teresa Emeloff and Renee Yoder.

Zeiler said the musical theme is similar to a modern-day “Romeo and Juliet” and delivers a message of friendship.

A cast of 56 will take the stage Friday through Sunday.

More than 250 pieces of lumber were used to construct the set and props include a volcano, waterfall, oversized moon and country club setting.

The musical will be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the high school.
