There was egg-stra excitement in the air Wednesday afternoon along Main Street in downtown Leechburg.

Cross Roads Community Presbyterian Church on Main Street welcomed youths of all ages to a free, Easter-themed Egg-Stravaganza event on the church grounds.

The event began last year as a way to invite children in the Leechburg community to learn about Easter.

Warm weather and sunshine provided a great atmosphere for outdoor coloring, crafts, storytime, snacks and Cross Toss, a velco-ball game involving large colorful crosses.

Brooke Cuffia, 11, of Leechburg particularly enjoyed the egg hunt.

“I like how a lot of kids come here and we do different activities,” Brooke said. “Easter is all about being together and worshipping God.”

Her mother and event volunteer Sarah Cuffia said organizers aim to grow the event.

Cuffia said about 30 kids participated last year, and about double that were expected Wednesday.

The Rev. Sue Washburn hosted Bible storytime on the lawn. She said the gathering is just what children need after a few years of covid-related difficulties.

“This is a great opportunity for us to tell the story of Jesus on the street,” Washburn said. “One of the important things for us to do is to just be available to the community and remind people that there are institutions and organizations that care for their well-being.”

Washburn is the transitional pastor at Cross Roads. She began her duties last August after the retirements of the Revs. Gary and Lisa Lyon.

Cross Roads will host an Easter Service at 10:15 a.m. Sunday.
