After 61 years, improvements are in the works for Freeport Area Senior High School.

At its meeting Thursday, the school board revealed plans for the $3 million project include a new boiler system and electrical work.

The science wing also is set for modernization.

“The full project has not been approved,” school board President Adam Toncini said. “Public comment will be available Wednesday, and we hope to have multiple meetings.”

Instead of a bond issue, the school district will take out a loan from Webster Bank of Waterbury, Conn. It was one of six banks that offered loans.

Freeport Area will pay 4.84% interest on the loan. Officials said the school district will save about $60,000 in interest payments with the conventional loan as opposed to issuing a bond.

The architect will be HHSDR, the same firm that designed the middle school building.

Other smaller projects will be paid for with loan proceeds, such as asphalting the parking lots of all four of the district’s schools.

The school district has until Dec. 31 to accept the terms of the loan.
