A New Kensington man was shot twice Wednesday when he struggled with a masked man who held a gun to his girlfriend’s head, police said.

The shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. in the 800 block of Anderson Street.

New Kensington police Chief Bob Deringer said the man, 36, told police he was walking inside his house when he saw a commotion on his front porch. When he opened the front door, he saw a masked man wearing a dark, hooded sweatshirt holding a gun to his girlfriend’s head, according to the chief.

The resident struggled with the gunman and was shot twice. The man then ran to his neighbor’s house while the suspect ran down Anderson Street toward the Valero gas station.

“The victim ran to the neighbor, knocked on the door screaming for them to call 911,” Deringer said. “He then laid down on the porch.”

Deringer said the wounds were not considered to be life-threatening.

Westmoreland County Detective John Clark said the victim was shot in the hand and shoulder. He was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh and later to another hospital for observation.

The victim’s girlfriend is OK, Clark said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call New Kensington Detective Sgt. Sam Long at 724-339-7534.
