Ann Cook of Vandergrift and her twin sister Ade Cook enjoy a walk along the Roaring Run Trail in Apollo on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, with their pets Dotti and Eri.

The Pittsburgh group Venture Outdoors is planning a full moon hike on the Roaring Run Trail in Kiski Township and an Apollo history lesson on Saturday.

John Linkes, a director with the both the Roaring Run Watershed Association and the Kiski Watershed Association, was pleased that a Pittsburgh group of outdoor recreational tourists would be visiting the area.

“It’s a chance to show some of the people of Pittsburgh the beauty of our trail and the Roaring Run area,” Linkes said.

Although a number of people come to kayak on the Kiski River, it’s special when a group comes to visit the trail and the town of Apollo to take in a local history lesson, Linkes said.

“Learn about the Apollo 11 space mission and the Western Pennsylvania town (Apollo) that has always celebrated the historic moon landing,” Venture Outdoors advertised on its website.

The trip begins with a visit to the Apollo Area Historical Society museum and then goes to the Roaring Run Trail for the moonlight hike. The Roaring Run Watershed Association will be provide guides for the outing.

While the hike costs $5 to $10 depending on Venture Outdoors membership, Armstrong County residents can attend the event for free, but they must register online and enter the discount code ARMSTRONG2019.

The outing is in partnership with the Rivers of Steel Heritage Corp., which administered funding for the outing paid in part by a grant from the Pennsylvania Dept of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation, Environmental Stewardship Fund.
