Pickleball coming soon to Oakmont's Riverside Park
Oakmont is hopping on the pickleball bandwagon.
Council voted Monday, May 20, to award the contract for the Oakmont Borough Park Improvement project to Dun Rite Construction & Paving of Tarentum.
The more than $251,000 project will take place at Riverside Park to help foster a community-friendly activity space.
“I’d like to note that this will bring pickleball to Oakmont,” Councilman John Arnold said.
According to borough Manager Scot Fodi, the existing basketball court will be converted into pickleball courts.
A new basketball court will be built at the northern entrance of the park next to Riverview High School. Footers will be placed so the borough can erect a high-roof pavilion with interior lighting over the court.
Fodi said the borough wants to be able to add the pavilion so people can play basketball safely at night and in the rain, and so it can host outdoor community events such as Relay for Life.
There also will be a concrete patio built in the grassy space between the basketball court and dek hockey rink.
“That will be for a future exterior kitchen that will tie into the use of the pavilion and basketball court,” Fodi said.
The borough is making these changes with local tax money as well as a state Gaming Economic Development Tourism Fund grant administered by Allegheny County. Once the funding is distributed, Fodi said, work could start in August and be finished in the fall.
