A Freeport catering business is distancing itself from a similarly named Brentwood restaurant that is flouting the state’s covid safety regulations.

On its Facebook page, Cracked Egg Catering Co. said it has no affiliation with the Crack’d Egg, a diner defying state shutdown orders.

“Cracked Egg Catering Co. is a family-owned and operated business located in Freeport, Pa.,” catering Director Maria Smith said Monday. “Other than our mobile kitchen, Sonny’s Smorgasbord, we are not affiliated with any other business.”

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf on Thursday announced new orders to slow the spread of the coronavirus, including a ban on indoor dining until Jan. 4.

Some people commenting on social media confused Cracked Egg Catering in Freeport with Crack’d Egg in Brentwood.

In its post, Cracked Egg Catering says it follows covid guidelines. The business said a customer made the business aware of what was happening and thanked their patrons for their support.

Crack’d Egg also posted to Facebook that it was accepting donations for Toys for Tots with the Proud Boys, a far-right, neo-fascist group.

Cracked Egg Catering said it is not affiliated with the Proud Boys.

Speaking for herself and owner Eugene Rutkowski, Smith said, “We will never support any sort of supremacist or hate groups and consider that sort of ignorance a detriment to our society.”

A Toys for Tots coordinator for southern Allegheny County said Crack’d Egg is using its logo illegally and that it does not support the Brentwood restaurant’s collection and will not accept donations from it.
