A free biology-themed program hosted by an educator from the Carnegie Science Center is coming to the Vandergrift Public Library.
“Science in the Summer” will be offered in two sessions; from 5 to 6 p.m. for grades 2-3 and from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. for grades 4-6, Aug. 9-10 at the library located at 128 C Washington Ave.
Last year, the program was hosted virtually because of the pandemic.
This summer, it’s back in-person, and library organizers are eager to fill all sessions.
“It’s exciting to provide a learning program throughout the summer. Something kids get interested and excited over,” said Kelsey Lege, director of children’s programming at Vandergrift Public Library.
The two-day program is shorter this summer, reduced from four days, but Vandergrift library director Vanessa Groholski said the library is determined and focused to play a vital role in the community by providing innovative programs.
“These programs fill an educational gap and encourage learning and exploration,” Groholski said. “The program aims to inspire the next generation of scientists by providing opportunities to children to embody science careers, think scientifically, practice authentic techniques and of course, have fun.”
Aly Toy, staff educator and program presenter at Carnegie Science Center, will facilitate the classes.
“Kiddos signing up should know that we are going to be thinking like a scientist during our hour and seeing some really cool, fun things. Bring good attitudes and open minds,” said Aly Toy, education coordinator at Carnegie Science Center.
Funding for the program is made possible by The Franklin Institute based in Philadelphia and GSK, a global biopharma company.
“Any chance to explore and get messy, kids are always in,” Lege said.
The children can expect to focus on various biology fields such as paleontology, plant, wildlife and fisheries.
Lege said 18 openings remain, and interested participants may enroll by calling the library at 724-568-2212.
