Crews working on behalf of the City of Pittsburgh haul away a pine tree last year that became the city’s official Christmas Tree for 2023. The tree was cut from the property of the former St. Alphonsus Church along Pittsburgh Street in Springdale.

Pittsburgh’s latest official Christmas tree will come from Springdale. Sound familiar?

Including this year’s 40-foot blue spruce, donated by Guardian Angels Catholic Parish, four of the last six trees selected for display outside the City-County Building Downtown have come from Springdale.

And like the past two years, the evergreen hails from the former St. Alphonsus Church campus.

Crews with the city’s Forestry Division will transport and install Pittsburgh’s 109th Christmas tree Saturday. That will come with a slew of road closures, including from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Grant Street between Third and Fifth avenues Downtown.

Motorists also can expect temporary delays and rolling closures from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday as the tree is escorted to the City-County Building via Pittsburgh Street in Springdale, then Pillow Avenue and Hite Road in Cheswick and eventually Route 28 onto I-279.

From there, the tree will be taken across the Fort Duquesne Bridge, on Fort Pitt Boulevard and, finally, onto Grant Street.

The northbound travel lane of Grant Street closest to the City-County Building will be closed from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday for crews to finish decorating the tree.

An official tree lighting ceremony and other Light Up Night festivities will take place starting at 4 p.m. Nov. 23.
