Former Leechburg police chief Michael Diebold is facing a new felony charge after state police say he didn’t report all of the internet sites and apps he’d been using.
Diebold, 47, is a convicted sex offender and was ordered to be listed on the state’s Megan’s Law site for 25 years.
One of the requirements of being listed as a Megan’s Law offender is that he report all websites he uses within three business days of joining or using the sites and all screen names used for identification on the sites and apps.
The new charge was filed this week after, police say, Diebold admitted during a November court hearing that he had used 66 websites and apps.
During the hearing, police say, Diebold also provided a copy of email communication he had with another person on the Craigslist website.
When asked to confirm if Diebold had registered Craigslist with Megan’s Law, it was discovered by a state trooper that Diebold had registered only one site out of the 66 he’d admitted to using, according to a criminal complaint.
It’s not the first time Diebold has run afoul of registration requirements.
After pleading guilty in December 2018 to soliciting sex online from a state trooper posing as a 14-year-old girl, he was sentenced to serve nine to 23 months in jail and three years on probation in addition to registering under Megan’s Law as a sex offender.
But, in January 2020, state police in Armstrong County charged him with two felony counts of failing to provide accurate information when he registered.
Diebold pleaded guilty to those charges and was sentenced to serve 18 to 36 months in prison.
A preliminary hearing on the last charge is scheduled for Jan. 22.
