Fire safety personnel redirect traffic at intersection of Route 228 and Ekastown Road in Buffalo Township while police investigate a fatal traffic incident involving a pedestrian on Wednesday.

Police continue to investigate after one person was killed after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday morning along Ekastown Road in Buffalo Township.

Butler County 911 said the crash involving a vehicle and pedestrian was reported shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The Butler County Coroner’s Office pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

The deceased was later identified as Dave Roenigk in a report by TribLive news partners WTAE.

Buffalo Township police Chief Tim Derringer said a pickup was traveling south when it left the road and struck a person doing yard work outside of a “family-owned home” in the area of 775 Ekastown Road.

“The driver initially said he fell asleep, but we can’t confirm or deny that at this time,” Derringer said.

Buffalo Township police will lead the ongoing investigation with the assistance of Butler State police and Butler State police’s reconstruction team.

Ekastown Road was closed while police and emergency responders were on scene but reopened early Wednesday afternoon.
