What started out as a fun thing to enjoy at the beach has evolved into a small business for two West Deer sisters.

Juliet and Grace Moore, both Deer Lakes High School students, have started a hair tinsel business. They got the idea from getting it tied to their hair after a vacation to Sandbridge Beach in Virginia.

“We really liked it and thought to bring it back here. Not a lot of people do it outside the South,” said Grace, a sophomore.

They launched their business, Moore Knots, during Deer Lakes’ Holiday Craft Show last year. The sisters said that day went well but was hectic at times.

“We were new to this. It was a new environment of what we were doing,” Grace said.

Now, they typically try to do one or two events per month. Both are very involved in other extracurricular activities, but that’s not a problem when booking events, they said. Grace said if one of them isn’t able to make an event, the other one manages it on their own.

“That’s one of the best things of having a partner,” said Juliet, a freshman. “We’re able to rely on each other.”

As they’ve been booking events throughout the community, they’ve also gotten requests to do hair tinsel at birthday parties or by appointment.

At first, the venture was just a fun way of making money. Recently, the girls decided to save money to pay for overseas trip expenses. Juliet plans to go on a school trip to Italy, while Grace’s trip will cover Spain, London and Paris. The trips are scheduled for summer 2025.

Moore Knots charges $12 for 10 tie-ins and $17 for 20 tie-ins. When Juliet and Grace are working together, it takes about five to 10 minutes per client. It’s a little longer when just one of them is working, Grace said.

As first-time entrepreneurs, the girls have learned a lot about business, management and customer service along the way, Grace said.

“We’ve learned and gotten better along the way,” Juliet added.

Both sisters agree the most rewarding experience is seeing people’s reaction once they look in the mirror and see the tinsel in their hair.

“It makes them happy. It boosts their self-confidence and it’s special seeing that reaction from people,” Juliet said.

The girls also thanked their mom, Gail Moore, for providing support.

“There’s been times where we’ve wanted to quit, but she pushed us,” Juliet said. “Now, I’m grateful that she pushed us and kept going.”
