The parking lot at Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church is bound to turn a few heads on Father’ Day.
Vintage vehicles will fill the lot during the annual “Cool Cars, Cool Dads” event from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“I originated the idea as a fellowship event following worship, though now the thought is that it might encourage more folks to come worship with us that Father’s Day Sunday,” said Paul Privett, church volunteer.
“We are always looking for ways to bring the message of Christianity to others.”
People are encouraged to show off their favorite vehicle, be it flashy, classic or otherwise a looker.
Contemporary service begins at 9:30 a.m., and participants will flood the lot afterward to mingle.
Organizers hope to draw a nice-sized crowd filled with auto enthusiasts or others who just want to worship and socialize.
“It’ll be a neat way for the whole family to spend Father’s Day together,” Associate Pastor Rebecca DePoe said.
Admission is free.
Privett said the church has been hosting the event for about five years. There is room for 30 vehicles.
The Rev. L. Roger Owens, co-senior pastor, said the church has been a community institution for seven decades and seeks ways to welcome people.
“Sometimes we connect with the community through significant mission events like our annual Harvest Fair, which raises money for local service agencies,” Owens said.
“But sometimes we just want to connect with our community by hanging out.”
Owens said that in an increasingly lonely world, any opportunity to build community and a sense of belonging is important.
“We hope the car show on Father’s Day is just that kind of opportunity,” he said.
