A Clinton Township man was ordered to stand trial on multiple felony charges after state police responded to a call from a woman who said she became frightened when a man dressed in black came to her front door asking for a drink and then tried to pull the screen door open to get inside.
State police charged Jeffrey Dylan McMillen II, 30, of the 100 block of Coleman Lane with two felony counts of attempted theft along with felony counts of possession of drugs with the intent to deliver, illegal possession of a firearm and carrying a loaded weapon. He also was charged with two counts of criminal trespass and public drunkenness.
McMillen was being detained in the Butler County jail in lieu of a $50,000 cash bond. He was ordered to stand trial on the charges during a preliminary hearing Wednesday, Aug. 24 before District Judge Sue Haggerty and released after bond was changed to non-monetary, court records.
A formal arraignment on the charges in Butler County Common Pleas Court is scheduled for Oct. 18.
A state trooper wrote in the criminal complaint charging McMillen that he responded to a call at a home in the 300 block of Saxonburg Boulevard in Clinton Township shortly before noon Aug. 16.
The woman living there told police that a man came to her front door asking for a drink and then tried to pull open the screen door, the complaint said.
She said the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, so she pulled the door shut and ordered him off her property, police said.
The man, later identified as McMillen, walked around her house and then into the woods behind the home, falling several times, the complaint said.
While searching the area, the trooper spotted a man who fit the description the woman provided sitting in the driver’s seat of a car parked under a pole building, police said.
As the trooper approached the car, he saw the taillights and a turn signal come on before the brake lights flashed, the complaint said.
The man inside appeared to be searching through the vehicle and tried to drive away when he saw the trooper, police said.
The trooper said the man put the car’s gear shift in reverse and started turning the wheel but didn’t start the engine.
A Sig Sauer semi-automatic pistol was spotted in a compartment in the driver’s door, according to the complaint.
The trooper said McMillen exhibited erratic speech and movements and was unable to tell the trooper where he was or who owned the car.
After taking McMillen into custody, the trooper found 76 Suboxone strips and $402 in his possession, the complaint said.
Suboxone is a brand name for the prescription drug buprenorphine, which is used to treat opioid addiction. It is a controlled substance.
The owner of the vehicle told police that the gun inside belonged to him and that he did not know McMillen.
