You know it’s spring when the Burrellton Garden Club prepares for its annual flower sale to benefit city gardens.
A budding tradition for at least five years, the plant sale includes perennials from the private collections of garden club members and locally grown annuals acclimated to the Alle-Kiski Valley’s weather.
“Our patrons know they are getting quality plants, and they are much cheaper than what you would pay at a garden store,” said Maggie Davis, Burrellton’s membership chairman, who has been volunteering for the club for close to 30 years.
The May Mart will be held at the Lower Burrell City Hall garage from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14. The events also will offer garden flea-tique items and food and drinks.
The plant sale is the club’s biggest fundraiser of the year, with proceeds going toward plants, supplies and maintenance for eight public gardens.
“If you open your eyes to some of the beautifully landscaped spots around Lower Burrell, you should know that they come from the great volunteer work of the Burrellton Garden Club,” Lower Burrell Mayor John Andrejcik said.
“The city appreciates immensely their hard work for all that it shows,” he said.
This year, the club will focus on new plantings in a garden in the triangle at the intersection of Route 356 and Leechburg Road. The club has been working with PennDOT to design the garden, which will include stone edging. It is waiting for final approval from PennDOT for a grant to pay some of the garden expenses, Davis said.
The club also will plant a serviceberry tree in the pollinator garden at Burrell Lake Park.
Burrellton has close to 25 members.
“Everyone helps in some way,” Davis said. “If they can’t plant or water, they do different things to help with fundraising, public events and other projects,” she said.
The club plans, buys flowers for, plants and maintains Burrell Lake Park’s pollinator garden and bandstand garden. They do the same for the gardens at City Hall, the Route 56 and Leechburg Road intersection, the veterans’ monument at Stewart School and in Braeburn Heights.
