Springdale Township will hold a free event Sunday in which people can dispose of large household items in a dumpster at the township building on Plate Drive.
The special disposal event, scheduled from noon to 3 p.m., is sponsored by the Bear’s Inn on Hite Road.
“It’s easier for residents to take items to a dumpster than to the junk yard,” said David Bassetti, who owns the Bears Inn with his brother Tom Bassetti.
“We’ve been in the community for 40 years, and we’d figured we would do what we could for the township to help residents clean out their homes,” he said.
In addition to the bar, the Bassettis also deal in the scrap metal market.
The Bassettis are former coal miners with a love for local coal mining history and the community. In the past, they have donated to the township’s war and coal miners memorials and a commemoration monument for the rescue of the nine Quecreek miners in Somerset County in 2002.
Residents can dispose of large household items such as hot water tanks, lawn mowers, gas grills, metal shelving and small furniture. These are items that would not typically be accepted by the township’s contracted garbage hauler, Vogel Disposal Services.
However, some items will not be accepted such as televisions, computers, any appliance with Freon and tires.
Residents don’t have to make an appointment but must show photo identification to prove township residency, said township commissioners President Anthony Rozzano.
Township commissioners are looking for future opportunities for residents to drop off large household items for free on a monthly basis, Rozzano said.
