Aspinwall Police are offering wildlife safety tips after officers encountered a coyote pup in the borough on Monday.
Police posted to Facebook after spotting the animal walking near a home in upper Aspinwall.
“Although the Borough of Aspinwall welcomes all types of animals, some can be aggressive or dangerous,” the post read.
Officers offered a list of precautions to make residents aware of how to handle a possible encounter with the coyote, or other wild animals.
People who come in contact with the coyote can frighten it with loud noise and making “yourself look big.”
Residents should follow common tips for keeping wildlife at bay, including keeping garbage sealed, removing pet food or spilled bird food from their yards, using motion detectors and staying with pets while outdoors.
Officers said coyotes are usually skittish around humans and try to avoid people.
They said people should never feed the coyotes and never turn their back or run from them.
Residents who encounter an animal they are unsure of are encouraged to call police.
