American Legion oratorical, essay contests open to high school students

Westmoreland County high school students looking for college scholarships might want to sharpen their public speaking and essay skills for the 2020 Pennsylvania American Legion oratorical and essay contests.

The contests are open to all county students in grades 9-12, including home school and charter and private school pupils.

Applications for the oratorical contest, which must be submitted by Dec. 18, are at available at www.pa-legion.com. Winners will be announced Jan. 5 and will go on to the state finals, where the first-place scholarship is $7,500; second-place, $5,000 and third-place, $4,000.

The deadline for applications to the essay contest is Jan. 17. The county winner will go onto state finals, where there are scholarship awards of $3,500 for first place; $3,000 for second place and $2,500 for third place.
