It’s not often that political figures or municipal officials want to honor someone who kept them on their toes.
But Allegheny Township supervisors this week voted 3-0 to rename the municipal building’s Community Hall to the Mable V. Mazza Community Hall in memory of the longtime community activist and historian.
Mazza attended numerous meetings of township supervisors, Kiski Area School Board and other entities over the years and often let her feelings be known on various issues.
Mazza died on Nov. 5, 2020, at 88.
“She attended a great number of meetings over the years,” said Supervisors Chairman Michael Korns. “She was a terrific citizen and a terrific person, and we definitely want to honor her. Everyone across the county knew her. She’d ask some tough questions.”
At times, she corrected township and county officials on procedural matters, and she even adjusted the stem microphone for people wishing to address supervisors during meetings.
Mazza was a township notary for some 60 years and was a former receptionist at WHJB radio in Greensburg.
Supervisors hope to get lettering for the meeting room and formally make the name change at 7 p.m. March 14.
