Alle-Kiski Valley schools, students receive Gene Kelly Award nominations

Three Alle-Kiski Valley schools have received nominations for the Gene Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater.

The nominations, announced Tuesday by the Pittsburgh CLO, include the following schools and students:

• Deer Lakes’ “Mama Mia!” was nominated for best scenic design.

• St. Joseph High School’s “In the Heights” was nominated for best costume design. Olivia Jesse was nominated for best supporting actress for her portrayal of Daniela.

• Riverview High School’s Preston Proctor was nominated for best actor for his portrayal of Shrek in the school’s performance of “Shrek the Musical.”

Patterned after Broadway’s Tony Awards, the Gene Kelly Awards ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m. May 25 at Pittsburgh’s Benedum Center. In addition to more than 20 Kelly Awards presented at the event, several cash and university scholarships will be awarded.
