Firefighters from Lower Burrell Volunteer Fire Depart No. 3 show off their newly refurbished fire engine in September.

Eighteen volunteer fire and ambulance companies in the Alle-Kiski Valley and western Westmoreland County will share in $386,000 in newly announced state grants.

State Rep. Rob Brooks, R-Murrysville, said the grants are being doled out from the Fire Company and Emergency Medical Service Grant Program.

“These volunteers put themselves in danger on a daily basis at no cost to the taxpayers,” Brooks said. “This grant will certainly help them perform their jobs.”

The money can be spent by fire companies, emergency medical services and volunteer rescue squads on facilities, equipment, debt reduction, training, education and careers development.

Officials representing grant recipients could not immediately be reached late Friday.

Brooks represents the 54th Legislative District, which includes Fawn, West Deer and part of Harrison in Allegheny County, and in Westmoreland County spans the boroughs of Export, Lower Burrell and Murrysville and townships of Allegheny, Upper Burrell and part of Penn.
