After a steamy start to the week, it’s time for a cool and comfortable weekend.

Sweet celebration

In addition to football, Arnold Palmer and Mr. Rogers, Latrobe has another claim to fame — the banana split.

The Great American Banana Split Celebration is set Aug. 23-25 is all about that sweet treat.

The party takes place in downtown Latrobe, where the banana split was first invented by David Strickler, an apprentice pharmacist at a local drug store. Expect entertainment, an expo area, a 5K and of course, ice cream.

Time for wine

Cheers! It’s time once again for the annual Seven Springs wine festival — Aug. 23-25. The festival features complimentary wine sampling from 30 wineries, daily seminars, a variety of crafts and musical entertainment.

The festival runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $35 for Friday or Sunday and $45 for Saturday. A two-day ticket for Friday and Saturday is available for $62.

Eat out

The inaugural Greensburg Restaurant Week wraps up Sunday. So that means you still have three days to sample from the tasty treats on the menus of restaurants around town.

Singer, songwriter, rocker Willie Nile returns to the amphitheater of St. Clair Park for Friday’s SummerSounds concert.

From the SummerSounds website: “At some point we all have to admit to aging, to the inevitable passage of time. All of us except Willie Nile, that is. He’s probably old enough to be on the SummerSounds stage crew, but you couldn’t prove it by his present career arc, or his current resurgence of popularity.”

Antiques on the Diamond

Everything old will be new to someone who browses Antiques on the Diamond, set for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 24 in the historic borough of Ligonier.

The twice-a-summer event tends to draw upward of 50 antiques and collectibles dealers from far and wide, offering everything from jewelry to housewares to furniture and more.

When you’re all shopped out, you can refresh yourself with food and drink from a local eatery, or take in more history with a tour of Fort Ligonier.
