Two women were taken to a hospital Monday afternoon after the car in which they were riding veered off Route 28.

Witnesses told police the car flipped several times in the area of mile marker 19, just past the Tarentum exit, according to state police.

The driver and her passenger were taken to an area hospital in separate ambulances just after 2:30 p.m.

Their names and conditions were not immediately known.

State police are investigating.

At one point the accident caused single-lane traffic to back up well past the Burtner Road exit.
