A 26-year-old man from Homestead is in custody after 10 to 15 cars were entered and burglarized Thursday night in the Oakmont Commons, police said.
According to Oakmont police Chief Michael Ford, two people were involved, and police still are looking for the second suspect. He declined to identify the suspect in custody.
Court dockets identified the suspect as Martell Herriot. He is facing misdemeanor charges, including theft from a motor vehicle and loitering and prowling at night.
While car robberies can be spread over various locations, Ford said that wasn’t the case Thursday night.
“It comes in spurts,” he said. “Last night, the incident was contained to the (Oakmont) Commons.”
No vehicles were damaged, but all were unlocked, Ford said.
He said the best thing people can do to prevent these situations is to lock their cars at night.
“Lock your cars, take out valuables and, please, take your key fobs out,” Ford said.
He said one vehicle from Thursday night’s incident was reported stolen Friday.
Police still are sorting through the stolen items that were found with the suspect they apprehended, Ford said.
