TSA finds loaded gun in West Virginia man's carry-on bag at Pittsburgh International Airport
Transportation Security Administration officials at Pittsburgh International Airport confiscated a loaded handgun Sunday from a West Virginia man.
The .22 caliber handgun, which was loaded was five bullets, was the 10th gun detected this year at the airport’s security checkpoints.
When the TSA officer spotted the gun in the Wheeling man’s backpack, the Allegheny County Police were alerted and confiscated the gun. The man told officials that he forgot that he had his loaded gun among his carry-on items.
County police cited the man on a weapons charge, according to TSA officials.
“If you own a firearm, you need to know where it is at all times,” said Karen Keys-Turner, TSA’s Federal Security Director for the airport.
“Knowing where you put your gun is part of being a responsible gun owner. Now this individual faces a stiff federal financial civil penalty,” she said.
People who bring weapons to a checkpoint face a potential civil penalty of up to $13,900 from the TSA.
