A suspect and a responding Pittsburgh police officer were injured Saturday evening when police responded to a report of two men with a firearm inside a vehicle in the city’s Lincoln-Lemington neighborhood.

At about 6:45 p.m., officers approached the vehicle in the 7200 block of Everton Street and found a man in the driver’s seat and a male passenger with a gun in plain view.

When officers called for backup, the suspects tried to get away, sideswiping an arriving police car and backing up into another unoccupied police vehicle, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety.

Police didn’t pursue the suspect vehicle, which eventually crashed into a utility pole nearby at Apple and Chaucer streets.

One of the occupants had fled on foot, while the other was taken by ambulance to a hospital. Initially in serious condition, his condition was later upgraded, according to police.

An officer also was taken to a hospital for evaluation after his hand was injured, police said.

Narcotics were recovered from the vehicle, along with the firearm, police said.

Charges are pending as an investigation continues.
