State police pursuit ends in crash in Downtown Pittsburgh

A Beaver County man allegedly took off from a traffic stop early Friday and ultimately crashed in Downtown Pittsburgh, according to police.

State police troopers stopped 43-year-old Lee Chavez shortly before 12:30 a.m., according to a release.

It was not immediately clear where the traffic stop initially happened, but police said that as they approached the silver Mercedes Benz, Chavez took off toward Downtown Pittsburgh.

Police said the registration on the Mercedes had expired in May, and Chavez had several active arrest warrants. Court records show that he was charged by Pittsburgh police in March for an August incident that resulted in charges of aggravated assault by vehicle, fleeing police, accidents involving death or injury, reckless endangerment and myriad moving violations.

Chavez also has a charge of flight to avoid apprehension pending in Monroeville, records show.

Troopers followed Chavez until he crashed on Fort Pitt Boulevard and ran from the scene. Police said they chased him into a parking garage and eventually used a taser to take Chavez into custody.

Court records did not list the latest charges against Chavez as of early Friday.
