Workers will install speed humps and other traffic-calming measures this week in Pittsburgh’s South Side Slopes.

The work will take place on Pius Street between South 18th and Brosville streets from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, weather permitting.

City officials said data collected in 2021 showed that more than half of motorists in the area exceeded the posted speed limit of 25 miles an hour. The rate of speeding and history of crashes demonstrated “a strong need” for traffic calming efforts, officials said.

The project is slated to include four new speed humps in the corridor.

Crews also will install new high-visibility crosswalks to improve pedestrian crossings, city officials said.

Permanent signs and pavement markings will alert drivers to the new traffic calming elements.

During construction, drivers should expect intermittent closures of Pius Street. Officials said through traffic should seek an alternative route around the area, but local residents will be allowed access.

Temporary no-parking signs will be posted throughout the corridor where construction is taking place.
