National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist
Thomas Jefferson High School senior Anthony Sparta has been selected as a semifinalist for the prestigious National Merit Scholarship.
Sparta ranks among the top one percent of all U.S. high school seniors who completed the Preliminary SAT last year. He is president of the TJHS STEM Club and a member of the National Honor Society, Varsity Academic League and AP Humanities. He also is a member of the varsity boys tennis team.
Sparta will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 7,500 National Merit Scholarships that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.
Finalists will be selected in February 2022 and the Merit Scholarship recipients will be announced in the spring.
Enrollment in higher education
• Mia Olsen of Jefferson Hills is one of more than 4,100 students who began their collegiate journey at Utah State University, enrolling in the fall 2021 semester as a first-year college student. Olsen is attending USU at the USU Main campus.
Academic achievements
• Joseph Papale has been named to the Dean’s List at Southern New Hampshire University for the summer 2021 semester.
• Raeneesa Bey-Lockwood and Breck Kane have been named to the President’s List at Southern New Hampshire University for the summer 2021 semester.
